Arif Gafur
Social and Political Activism
Arif Gafur P.E. (ME 1973) - Arif Gafur has more
than 20 years of experience in the international
oil and gas industry in a range of management,
leadership and technical roles for Shell Oil and
other companies. During this period, he has directed
the commercial and operational aspects of a wide
variety of Exploration and Production ventures
in many countries including the United States,
Brazil, Mexico, UK (north Sea), Nigeria, Angola,
Equatorial Guinea, Pakistan and India. Currently
as the Project Manager for Jordan and Morocco,
he directs Shell's E&P operations in these
countries. He has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering
from University of Texas at Austin. Arif is actively
involved in local community endeavors and in the
US political process. He along with several concerned
men and women initiated a political grassroots
effort Houston which focuses on educating the
community on the US political process. The movement
which has grown enormously in a short period,
has had significant impact on the local political
landscape. Scores of community members now hold
offices as precinct chairpersons, election judges,
party delegates and committee members in the major
political parties. Arif himself has been elected
(or appointed) to various position in the Democratic
party, and was elected a National Delegate in
2004 National Convention. He currently represents
his district in Houston in the powerful Executive
Committee of the Texas Democratic party, and also
serves on key governing sub-committees. Arif Gafur
